The threat of snow and ice finally caught up with Tuesday Night pool last week when most of the team showed up and only one player from the opposing team appeared. Under the League’s inclement weather policy there would be no forfeits and all unplayed matches would have to be made up.
Given the option to play or go home, the other team’s lone player, Mike McFarland, decided to get one match out of the way. Randy took him on in a 5-4 race. Both players did not have their A game, and Mike gave Randy new life when he missed a tough cut on the eight ball while on the hill. Randy did not waste the gift and closed out the match in the next game for the victory 5-3.
Needing to make up four matches and play this week’s regular opponent, Tuesday would be a busy night of pool. With so many teams facing make up matches, finding an extra empty table would be a challenge.
Regular play began with George in a 4-4 race. George seemed to always be playing catch up and went down swinging 1-4. At the same time Linda began our first make up match in a 2-2 race against a brand new player. Linda stated she played poorly and fell 0-2.
Mary was up second in a 2-3 race. Mary is still learning the basics, and she came close in each game, but eventually lost 0-3.
Randy was up for the third match, a 5-5 race against the other team’s captain. Randy missed key shots at the end of several games and his opponent took advantage each time. In the end, the misses were too much to overcome, and Randy was done 3-5.
While Randy was losing Ann was playing a 3-3 race in another make up match. Ann wasted little time displaying the skill that made her a four and quickly took the match 3-2. Shortly after her make up match was over she began the fourth regular match and was facing a 3-4 race. Her strong play from the make up match continued and she was quickly up 2-1. At that point in the match, Randy began to brag about her record, and probably jinxed her. She stayed on the hill, while her opponent won the next three games for the match 2-4.
Our opponent decided next week was best for the last two make up matches, and the regular night’s last match had Mark in 6-2 race. Mark unfazed by his first race needing 6 games to win, coolly ran off six straight for the win 6-0. His win was our only victory for the regularly scheduled matches and left us with a 1-4 record. Our make up record so far, 2-1. |
